While Daphne and I took 5 days to celebrate our big birthday out of town with our kids and Mom, Brian stayed back at Skagua and built me a birthday surprise. As you might imagine, storage on a boat is a high commodity. I had asked him to build a space for my spices to sit on a ledge near the stove. Well, he took that request to the next level. I now have ledges on both walls of the galley. As you can see in the photo, many jars and condiments and spices now fit along the hull. The other side of the galley (not shown) has a similar amount of storage for silverware, dishsoap, etc. This significantly frees up space for larger items to occupy the lower cabinets.
On the topic of the kitchen, let me tell you what it's like. It is two approximately 7 feet long countertops (one is longer than the other) running on opposite walls of the hull. The outer hull has the two-burner propane stove with a small oven. Above the stove is a circular porthole currently propped open with a spoon. I have plans to make a more effective way to keep it open. Along the opposite counter is a large double sink which has a saltwater foot pump below and a spout for squirting the ocean water into the sinks. It's excellent for rinsing dishes and cleaning out the sink, which drains right back into the ocean. And yes, we use ocean-safe dishsoap. Currently we don't have freshwater plumbed to the sink yet but have a temporary gravity feed tube from our freshwater storage on deck. To wash dishes, I boil a kettle of freshwater, rinse all the dishes in saltwater, and then use the hot water to do the final wash and to rinse off the suds. I can wash a whole pile of dishes with only one kettle of fresh water....very important to conserve fresh water.
